Dolly Parton’s First Posthumous Song Returns to Her Bluegrass Roots

Dolly Parton’s previously unreleased recording of “Bound to Ride” has arrived as the first posthumous song released following her death.

Parton recorded her vocals in 2022 for Where the Soul Never Dies: Celebrating 80 Years of The Stanley Brothers, a tribute album scheduled for release on October 16.

The traditional bluegrass song was popularized by the Stanley Brothers in 1964. Parton’s contribution features the First Ladies of Bluegrass and brings her voice back to the mountain-music roots that shaped her career.

The recording was completed years before Parton’s final illness. It is newly released, not newly recorded, and its appearance should not be interpreted as evidence about how much unreleased material remains.

Most of the tribute album was recorded live in the studio, while Parton completed her performance separately during a period of heightened COVID concerns.

The album also celebrates the Stanley Brothers’ influence on bluegrass and country music, connecting multiple generations of artists through songs central to the genre’s history.
